Your Green Card Arrived, But Your Social Security Card Never Came

Many new permanent residents assume their Social Security card will automatically arrive after receiving a Green Card. In theory, that is how the system is supposed to work. In practice, many applicants in 2025 and 2026 are experiencing delays or complete failures in the data transfer process between immigration agencies and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
If your Green Card has already arrived and your Social Security card has not, do not assume it is still processing indefinitely.
Why the Automatic Process Fails
Until recently, many Adjustment of Status applicants automatically received a Social Security card after Green Card approval through a data-sharing process between USCIS and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
That process was reportedly paused in 2025. As a result, many applicants who adjusted status inside the United States are no longer automatically receiving Social Security cards, even if they requested one on Form I-485.
This issue mainly affects Adjustment of Status applicants and some EAD recipients. Immigrant visa holders entering the U.S. through consular processing generally still receive their Social Security cards automatically after arrival, although it may take several weeks or longer.
If you received your Green Card through Adjustment of Status and your Social Security card has not arrived, do not assume it is still being processed. You may need to apply directly with SSA.
The 14-Day Rule
SSA guidance states that if you received your Green Card but have not received your Social Security card within 14 days, you should stop waiting and visit a local SSA office.
Waiting several months will not usually fix the issue automatically.
What You Need to Bring to the SSA Office
Most applicants must apply in person to resolve the problem. Phone calls and online requests are often insufficient.
Bring the following documents:
Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card
Your Green Card (Form I-551)
Your foreign passport
Original birth certificate
Certified English translation of the birth certificate, if applicable
Preparing these documents in advance can help avoid repeat visits.
Important Issue: SAVE Verification Delays
When you visit SSA, the officer will verify your immigration status through the SAVE system.
A common issue occurs when USCIS has already updated your status, but SAVE has not synchronized yet. In that situation, SSA may incorrectly state they cannot verify your lawful status.
If this happens, ask the officer to initiate a manual SAVE verification request.
This additional verification can take one to two more weeks, but it often resolves the problem. Without the manual request, your application may remain stuck indefinitely.
Do Not Ignore the Problem
A missing Social Security card can create problems with employment, payroll processing, banking, tax filings, driver’s license applications, and other important matters.
If more than two weeks have passed since your Green Card arrived and no Social Security card has appeared, it is usually time to visit the SSA office directly.
