Filing Immigration Forms Online: What You Need to Know

ree

In recent years, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has expanded its online filing options to make immigration applications faster, safer, and more convenient. Several common immigration forms can now be filed directly online, and USCIS has even started allowing applicants to upload completed PDF versions of certain forms instead of mailing paper copies.

Here’s what you need to know before you file.

1. Two Ways to File Online

USCIS currently allows eligible applicants to submit forms in one of two ways:

  • Filling out the form online: You answer questions through a guided USCIS portal that automatically checks for missing information or errors before you submit.

  • Uploading a completed PDF form: You download and complete the latest USCIS form version on your computer, then upload it—along with your evidence—through your USCIS account.

Not all forms qualify for online submission, but the list is growing. Always check USCIS’s official page for “Forms Available to File Online” to confirm that your form and category are eligible.

2. Common Forms You Can File Online

Some of the most frequently used immigration forms that can be filed online include:

  • Form I-130 – Petition for Alien Relative

  • Form I-90 – Application to Replace or Renew a Green Card

  • Form I-765 – Application for Employment Authorization (certain categories)

  • Form I-539 – Application to Extend or Change Nonimmigrant Status

  • Form N-400 – Application for Naturalization

  • Form N-600 – Application for Certificate of Citizenship

  • Form I-912 – Request for Fee Waiver

  • Form AR-11 – Change of Address

The new PDF upload process is currently available for select forms, such as Form I-765 (Employment Authorization) and Form I-912 (Fee Waiver), with more forms expected to be added in the future.

3. Benefits of Filing Online

Filing online offers many advantages compared to mailing a paper application:

  • No mailing delays – You can submit instantly and receive a confirmation right away.

  • Error prevention – With the online form, the system alerts you if you miss a required field or forget a signature.

  • Secure payment – You can pay filing fees online through your USCIS account.

  • Easier case tracking – You’ll receive updates, case notices, and Requests for Evidence (RFEs) directly through your account.

  • Digital recordkeeping – All your submitted forms and documents stay accessible in one place.

4. How the Upload Process Works

If you choose to upload a completed PDF form, here’s how the process typically goes:

  1. Download the latest USCIS form from the official website.

  2. Complete the form carefully, making sure every field is accurate and legible.

  3. Log in to your USCIS online account (or create one if you haven’t already).

  4. Upload your completed form and attach all required supporting documents.

  5. Pay the filing fee online, if applicable.

  6. Submit and receive an instant confirmation number to track your case.

USCIS currently accepts documents in PDF, JPG, or JPEG format, with a file size limit of 12 MB per upload. Be sure that your scans or photos are clear and not password-protected.

5. Important Reminders

  • Always use the latest form version from the USCIS website.

  • Not all filing categories within a form are eligible for online submission.

  • Some forms (especially when requesting a fee waiver) must still be mailed.

  • If your documents are not in English, include a certified translation.

  • Keep copies of everything you upload or submit.

6. Should You File Online on Your Own?

While the online system makes filing easier, it doesn’t make the law any simpler. USCIS still expects every answer and document to be accurate and complete. A small mistake—such as selecting the wrong eligibility category or forgetting a supporting document—can delay your case or even lead to a denial.
