U.S. Visa Interviews Now Restricted to Your Home Country or Country of Residence

If you're applying for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa—such as for tourism, study, or work—there's an important update you need to know: As of September 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of State has implemented a policy requiring all nonimmigrant visa applicants to schedule their visa interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of nationality or legal residence.
This change significantly limits the option to apply for a visa in a third country, a practice that many applicants previously used to avoid long wait times or backlogs in their home countries.
What This Means for You
No More Third-Country Interviews: Applicants can no longer schedule visa interviews in countries other than their own, unless they reside there legally. This means no more traveling to neighboring countries for potentially shorter wait times.
Increased Scrutiny: Applying outside your home country may make it harder to qualify for the visa, as consular officers may question your intent and ties to your place of residence.
Non-Refundable Fees: Visa application fees are non-refundable. If your application is denied due to applying in the wrong location, you will not receive a refund.
Exceptions to the Rule
There are limited exceptions to this policy:
Countries Without U.S. Consulates: If your home country does not have a U.S. embassy or consulate, you may apply at the designated embassy or consulate for your region.
Special Visa Categories: Certain visa categories, such as A, G, and NATO visas, may have different requirements. It's essential to check the specific guidelines for your visa type.
What Should You Do Next?
Verify Your Eligibility: Ensure you meet the requirements to apply in your home country or country of residence.
Schedule Your Interview Early: Due to potential backlogs, it's advisable to schedule your visa interview as early as possible.
Prepare Your Documents: Ensure all required documents are complete and accurate to avoid delays.
