Important Update: Mandatory Registration Before Your Immigrant Visa Interview

Many applicants believe that once their immigrant visa interview is scheduled, they are ready to go. In reality, there is an important mandatory step that must be completed before the interview, and missing it can delay your case or prevent your interview from taking place.
The U.S. Department of State requires immigrant visa applicants to complete an online registration after receiving their interview appointment. This is not a new rule, but it is frequently missed by applicants before their interview.
What This Requirement Is

After your interview is scheduled by the National Visa Center, you must complete an online registration through a website designated by the US embassy or consulate where your interview will be held.
This step does not schedule your interview. Your interview date is already assigned. Instead, the registration is used to confirm your information, connect your case to the consulate’s system, and set up passport delivery after visa issuance.
Important Update from the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City

While this requirement has existed for years, the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City has recently implemented a deadline for this mandatory registration.
Applicants must complete their Appointment Registration at least 5 business days before the interview. Effective May 4, 2026, applicants who fail to do so will not be admitted to their interview.
If your interview is scheduled in Ho Chi Minh City, this deadline is critical and should be treated as mandatory.
How to Complete the Registration for Interviews in Ho Chi Minh City
You must complete your Appointment Registration through the U.S. Visa Scheduling System before attending your interview. While the system is straightforward, many applicants make mistakes by rushing or entering incorrect information.
Step 1: Create or Log Into Your Account
Create a new account if needed, or log in to your existing account. You may use any email address, it does not need to match the one used with the NVC.
Step 2: Start Your Application
From your Dashboard, select “Start Application” and begin the process.
Step 3: Complete Each Section Carefully

Step 4: Save Your Confirmation
Once completed, the system will display your Appointment Confirmation with your interview date. Download and print the confirmation page, and keep a digital copy for your records.
Important Notes
Your interview date is already scheduled and will appear after registration
If you receive a new passport, submit a request through your account to update your passport number and upload copies of both passports
If you need to change your delivery address, submit a request and print an updated confirmation page
Always keep your latest confirmation, especially after any updates
What Happens If You Skip This Step

If you do not complete the required registration, your interview may not proceed as scheduled. In Ho Chi Minh City, you may be denied entry if the registration is not completed on time. In other cases, your visa processing can be delayed or require rescheduling.
This is a simple administrative step, but it directly affects your ability to move forward in the process.
Final Thought

Immigration cases can be delayed not only for eligibility issues, but also when required procedures are missed. Completing this registration early and correctly helps ensure your interview goes smoothly.
