How To Estimate When Your Immigrant Visa Interview Might Be Scheduled?

If you're waiting for your immigrant visa interview, you’ve probably asked yourself this question: When will my interview be scheduled?

We’re happy to share a new resource from the U.S. Department of State that can help give you a better idea of what to expect. As of April 29, 2025, the government launched a new Immigrant Visa (IV) Scheduling Status Tool. While it won’t give you an exact interview date, it provides a helpful snapshot of when interviews are currently being scheduled by U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, based on when applicants’ cases became documentarily complete.

What Does “Documentarily Complete” Mean?

Your case is documentarily complete when the NVC has received all required forms and documents and confirms that your file is ready to be scheduled for an interview.

Keep in mind, the IV Scheduling Tool does not show your individual case status. It’s simply a public update showing which cases are now being scheduled, based on when they became complete.

How to Use the Tool

Access the IV Scheduling Status Tool here:👉 IV Scheduling Status Tool

  1. Choose a Visa Category:

  • Immediate Relative Visas

  • Spouses of U.S. citizens

  • Children (under 21 and unmarried) of U.S. citizens

  • Parents of U.S. citizens

  • Employment-Based Preference Visas

  • Alien with extraordinary ability

  • Outstanding professor or researcher

  • Multinational executive or manager

  • Professional holding advanced degree

  • Skilled worker

  • Investor (employment creation)

  • Family-Sponsored Preference Visas

  • Unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens

  • Spouses and children (under 21 and unmarried) of lawful permanent residents

  • Unmarried sons and daughters (21 and older) of lawful permanent residents

  • Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens

  • Siblings of adult U.S. citizens

  1. Select the U.S. Embassy or Consulate: Choose the location where your interview will take place.

  1. View Scheduling Status: A box will show what “documentarily complete” date the consulate is currently working on for interviews. For example:

  • If it says "Nov-23", then the embassy is now scheduling interviews for cases that became documentarily complete in November 2023.

  • If your case became complete in December 2023 or later, your interview might not be scheduled yet.

  • If your case became complete in or before November 2023, your interview could be coming up soon.

You can then compare that to your own case's documentarily complete date to get a general idea of how close you might be to being scheduled.

Important Considerations

  • Scheduling Variability: Interview scheduling depends on the availability of appointments at each embassy or consulate, which can vary due to workload and staffing.

  • No Guaranteed Dates: The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

  • Regular Updates: The tool is updated monthly to reflect current scheduling statuses.

Not all immigrant visa cases are reflected in the IV Scheduling Status Tool. If you are applying under one of the following categories, your case won’t show up in this system:

  • Diversity Visas (DV)

  • Afghan Special Immigrant Visas (SIV)

  • I-601A Provisional Waivers

  • Adoption-based visas
