$1,000 to Go Home: Trump Administration Launches Cash Incentive Program for “Voluntary Deportation”

The Trump administration announced on May 5, 2025, a new initiative offering $1,000 "stipends" and complimentary airline tickets to undocumented immigrants who voluntarily choose to leave the United States. This program, facilitated through the CBP Home app, aims to reduce the financial and logistical burdens associated with formal deportations.

Program Overview

Participants are required to use the CBP Home app, a rebranded version of the CBP One app, to signal their intent to depart and to coordinate their travel plans. The $1,000 stipend is disbursed after DHS confirms the individual's departure from the U.S. 

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Although DHS touts that participation in the program may preserve the option for legal reentry in the future, this is highly misleading. Individuals who have physically been in the U.S. for a year or more without lawful status may face a 10-year ban on reentry upon departure. It is very important that potential participants seek legal advice for their specific situation before enrolling in the program. 

There are concerns that the financial incentive may pressure vulnerable individuals to leave without fully understanding their legal rights or the long-term consequences. Additionally, there are apprehensions about the collection and use of personal data through the CBP Home app, which could impact future immigration proceedings.
